The Chances You Take

A new oneshot of the Orange persuasion shall be coming soon Laydees.

I had an idea whilst watching an episode of Frasier the other night so part of the plot is stolen from that.

The day from hell...but one good thing sticks in Jason's mind. Does he get what he wants? Tune in to find out Laugh Wink

(Oh and the reason I used that pic will become clear when you read the oneshot)

I love Frasier Hyper Hyper Hyper Hyper Hyper

I can imagine the posh-talk and over-thinking everything Laugh Laugh

and just getting in all sorts of funny situations, that are so fitting of him and Niles Laugh

I don't usually read Jason stuff, but since that's a plot idea, written by you, and he's my 2nd favourite, i'll give it a shot Grin

Don't get too Hyper the oneshot is not at all like Frasier, it's just where I stole part of the idea from.

I haven't turned Jason into a posh talking psychiatrist Laugh Laugh

Well I was watching an episode from series 7 the other night and the first part of it made me think I could take it, change it a bit and then make it into a oneshot...so you might not recognise it anyway.

I see... I'm not sure which series is playing these days... there's so many of them, probably 10 or 12 seasons , with nearly 24 episodes each, I know it's not in the start...

They're currently playing season 6, right in the middle of it... I checked imdb

It's a good investment, you can never get tired of laughing while watching Frasier... unlike with movies, after 1 or 2 times I get tired of watching them (with rare exceptions) so I'd rather rent them

The Chances You Take

Generally, I didn’t mind taking the tube but I’d got out of the wrong side of bed this morning and it was packed. Or should I say I got out of the wrong side of someone else’s bed? As it turned out the girl was hot but I could see right through her, she was interested in me because of what I was and not who I was. So I sat there on the tube watching businessmen bark orders into their phone, students being noisy and telling tales of their drunken and debauched nights out, people reading The Metro to pass the time as they set off for another day at a job they probably didn’t enjoy. By the time it got to St James’s Park, there wasn’t room to breathe let alone move and I looked at my watch realising I was late for the studio. I quickly pulled my phone out of my pocket calling Gaz and telling him I was on my way but I’d been held up.

“No worries mate, we’ll just sit here and wait cos it’s not like this studio time is costing us money or anything. Actually what am I saying, I take it you got a shag last night and clearly that’s far more important” he said deadpan.

“Gaz?”

“Yeah mate”

“Piss off”

With that I put the phone back in my pocket and sat back stretching out my legs a bit as we got to Sloane Square and most people had or were leaving the carriage. My head fell back against the window and I closed his eyes, I was almost nodding off when two voices seemed to catch my attention. Slowly opening one eye I caught a quick glimpse of the two women sat across the other side of the carriage.

“Hiya Cassie! Long time no see hun”

“Oh my God, Alison! How are you?”

Watching as they hugged, the biggest grin appeared on their faces, then I realised I was also smiling and staring too, my mum had taught me it was rude to stare but the girl with the brown hair and infectious laugh had caught my eye. Shifting slightly I tried to focus in on their conversation without being too obvious.

“Couldn’t be better, I got promoted at work I’m PA to Mr James now”

“I know how much you wanted that, you must be thrilled”

“Yeah I’m really happy, now if I can find a hot man with some brains and a smidgen of manners I’d be good to go!”

“Yeah tell me if you find one, it’s like finding a needle in a haystack round here!”

“You still at Waterstone’s?”

“Yeah but they moved me to the one at Notting Hill gate. Listen we’re having a girls night out on Friday, how about you join us?”

“I’d love to, this is my stop but I’ll call you for the details ok?”

“Ok hun, see you later!”

The other girl got off at South Kensington leaving the hot girl on her own. She looked like she was in her early 30’s, long flowing brown hair and gorgeous piercing eyes. A few seconds later she looked up and caught my eye, giving a slight smile before burying her head back in her book. What the hell I had nothing to lose, so I got up and was about to approach her when there was a jolt that made me lose my balance and I stumbled not being quick enough to grab onto the rail and ending up in some guys lap.

“Oooh I always pray for a hottie to fall into my lap but I had no idea my prayers were being heard! If you wanted a feel you only had to ask!” the man nodded to where my hand was now pressed against his crotch and gave him a wiggle of his eyebrows. I didn’t know where to look and as I quickly got up and turned around, the woman had stood up and was getting ready to step out of the carriage. It was too late and she was gone. Between then and High Street Kensington the man I had accidentally groped kept looking up giving flirty smiles and raising his eyebrow. I could tell I was being checked out and shifted uncomfortably in the seat waiting for the carriage to come to a stop before getting up, not wanting to risk an accident again! About to step out the carriage the man pinched my arse and stuck a card in my back pocket, copping a feel whilst doing so and shouted at me to call him in what have been the campest voice I’d ever heard in my life and I’d heard a lot of camp voices! Reaching the exit I saw it was raining “bloody great” I muttered before turning up the collar on my jacket. Leaving the station and turning right setting off along the street to Whole Foods, I knew I was late but what difference was an extra 20 minutes going to make. Stopping at the cake section I picked up some brownies and muffins for the lads and a few flapjacks for myself, hoping that the cakes would stop them giving me a hard time for being late. I was slightly wet from the rain but thankfully when I got outside again it had stopped and looked safe to walk to the studio, two minutes later the heavens opened and I carried on walking, mumbling to about the weather. All thoughts returned to the woman on the tube, just as I was picturing her face and getting ready to cross the road a taxi swung round the corner and drove through the biggest puddle known to man which had covered me from head to toe. By the time I got to the studio I looked like someone had been at me with a hose pipe and dragged me through a hedge backwards.

“What the hell happened to you?” Howard sniggered as Jason peeled off his coat and jumper. “You look like you’ve been through one of those car wash’s with the big brushes!”

“What happened to me?! The tube was bloody packed, there was a hot girl on there...I was about to talk to her when there was a jolt and I fell over”

Mark sniggered and Gary tried his best not to laugh, watching as Jason bent over to undo his soggy shoe laces something fell out of his pocket.

“I know you had a date last night but are you paying for it now?” Gary asked with a raised eyebrow?

“What?” I snatched the card from him and realised it was the one the scary guy had stuck in my pocket on the tube; apparently he was a gay escort of some kind. “Yeah that was the next part of my story, I fell over into this guy’s lap and he took a shine to me, it might have had something to do with the fact that I groped him but hey, this day couldn’t get any worse right?”

“I don’t suppose so, why were you groping a gay guy on the tube?” Mark asked.

“I wasn’t!! And you’re wrong it did get worse. I got bloody soaked in the rain, and then some moronic cab driver went through a puddle which I got the brunt of...”

“Hang on, you’ve been to Whole Foods” Gary nodded to the now soggy bag which had been placed on the table.

“Yes I went to get us some cakes and I know that I was late so I should have come straight here, are you not listening to a word I’m saying. Don’t piss me off anymore than I already am!”

“Right whatever. So the cakes, are they still edible or what?”

“Gaz look at me, I’m soaked through, and my shoes appear to be leaking...fucking Converse!” I almost spat, trying to get the knots out of the laces which I could almost ring the water from.

“Hey don’t insult the world’s greatest footwear because you’re pissed off!” Howard frowned.

“I got hit on buy some scary gay guy, the hot woman on the train probably thinks I’m an idiot and...”I reached into the whole foods bag “my flapjack’s gone all limp and soggy” I announced holding it up and watching as part of it broke off and fell to the floor.

“Is that why you’re in a bad mood? Did something else go limp on your date last night?”

For a brief second I looked at Mark and thought about killing him, surely we could survive without Mark but then again he was writing some amazing lyrics lately.

“My date was fine, yes I got a shag as you so nicely put it earlier Gaz but I could see the pound signs in her eyes already so I won’t be repeating it”

“I don’t give a crap about all that, what about the other cakes? Tell me you got something more sturdy than flapjacks for us?”

“You’re fucking unbelievable Gaz, haven’t you heard a word I said?!”

“Yeah I heard it all, but there’s nothing I can do about it! Come on let me see that bag?” he grabbed the Whole Foods bag and proceeded to carefully remove the muffins and brownie’s, inspecting each one before placing them on the table. Grinning as they were all still in one piece and appeared to be edible.
“Don’t worry the cakes are fine” He let out a breath, mock wiping his brow to the annoyance of Jason who shook his head and wandered off mumbling something about tea.

After a few hours the others were getting fed up with Jason, he was being asked questions and answering with “whatever” then when he was pushed for an opinion he was snapping at them all.

“What do you think Jay, should we go with this or scrap it for that other track?”

“For the final time, I don’t really care but can we pick one and get on with it!” I exclaimed, my hand flying out and catching my tea which proceeded to spill all over me.
“Flippin ‘eck!”

“Jay mate, what’s really bothering you apart from the fact that it’s been the crappiest day in history?” Howard asked.

“That girl on the tube, I can’t get her out my head. She was gorgeous, prettiest smile I’ve ever seen. She got on and started chatting to a friend and I couldn’t take my eyes off her”

“Maybe you’ll see her on the tube again”

“Yeah, because she’d want to talk to the weirdo who gropes gay men on the tube!”

Gary let out a laugh and looked at across, for the first time that day a smile then a chuckle came from me. I had to laugh; I was fed up of feeling pissed off.

“Seriously though, she was gorgeous. Her name was Cassie”

“So you were listening in on her conversation?”

“No Mark, they were talking loudly, I couldn’t help overhear” I grinned.

“So did you overhear any other useful nuggets of information?”

“No I don’t think so...”

“Right so can we get back to work now without you biting our heads off?” Gary asked.

“Yeah I suppose we can...wait! She works in the Waterstone’s at Notting Hill Gate”

“There you go then simple, you have her name and where she works. Go in there and ask for her” Howard shrugged. “What’s the worst that can happen?”

“I can’t do that, she’ll recognise me and what happened was way too embarrassing!”

“Fine let her go then but either way can we get back to work now?!” Gary was getting frustrated and just wanted to get something done today, half the day was already gone.

(Contd.)

Later that day after much teasing from the lads and finally deciding I had nothing to lose I left the studio and started walking towards the book store where Cassie worked. What’s the worst that could happen? Deciding I should change first I quickly went home, grabbed a shower and got changed before going back out again. Stepping inside the book shop I glanced around for any sign of her but couldn’t spot her yet. Wandering round pretending to browse the books I felt my palms get sweaty and nerves starting to kick in. What the hell was wrong with me?! Carrying on browsing I knocked a book off the shelf and bent down to pick it up. Looking up I noticed Cassie, standing right next to me and looking down at me.

“Do you need any help sir?”

“No, no thanks”

“Ok fair enough” she was about to turn and walk away when my brain kicked into gear and without realising I had called her back.

“Cassie!”

She turned round with a frown and stepped towards me again.

“Do I know you?”

“No...”

“Right, so how do you know my name?”

“Look this is going to sound really weird but I saw you on the tube this morning. I overheard your name and that you worked here”

“So what? You’re some kind of weird stalker?!”

“No!”

“Hang on...I remember you! You fell over and landed in that guys lap! From what I could tell it was him you were interested in” She looked down and caught a glimpse of the book he had knocked over which was still in his hand.
“Doesn’t look like you need that book, I mean you know how to make memorable moves on people, that was quite impressive this morning! Usually I’d say just talk to someone but I guess that made more of an impact!”

He looked down at the book and realised that yes, this day could get worse. He was holding a copy of “Sex for dummies”.

“That was an accident! I had stood up and there was a jolt and...”

“So you were accidentally groping that guy? It was funny though and it cheered up my morning!”

“Look I came here because I saw you this morning and I was about to talk to you when I ended up in that guys lap and you got off. I’d overheard you worked here and I came to see if you were around ok?”

“Honestly, it’s not ok. It’s creepy and you shouldn’t be listening in to people’s conversations”

“People shouldn’t be so loud then should they?!” he snapped back at her, this was not going to plan at all and he was starting to wonder why he’d bothered!

“If you’ll excuse me there are actual customers who’d like some help” she turned and walked away from him, his eyes drawn to the way her hips and bum moved as she got further across the shop. Finally coming back to his senses he realised he had lost his chance and decided that this whole day was a bust and he’d quite like to go home and wipe it from his memory.

Friday night had come and Cassie couldn’t wait for her night out with the girls. They all met at her flat and the taxi took them to the club. The five of them got straight in thanks to the fact Cassie’s friend part owned the place. Finding a booth they sat down and Alison went to get the drinks in. After a couple of hours of dancing and drinking the girls were all gathered again at the table.

“Cas, that guy keeps looking at you” Megan nodded to the guy who was casually leaning on the bar.

“Oh great, not him again!” she rolled her eyes and started to tell the girls what had happened.

“Guys do none of you know who that is?!” Mel asked, as her eyes moved to the figure stood beside him at the bar. “That’s Jason Orange and Howard Donald...”

“Who?” Cassie asked.

“Seriously, you’ve never heard of them? They’re in Take That!” she almost squealed trying to get a better glimpse.

“Right”

“Right?! Is that all you’ve got to say, what is wrong with you people?!”

“Look, I don’t know anything about Take That; I think I’ve heard of them...Gary Barlow, right?”

“Well yes but there are four of them” Mel rolled her eyes and continued to stare over at the bar.

“Mate, I think we’ve got some admirers” Howard nodded over to the girls table and Jason turned to look.

“Oh great, it’s her! The girl from the tube who I am now trying to avoid at all costs!”

“Oh, well it looks like they’re talking about us. They’ve been looking over here for the past ten minutes”

“Yeah she’s probably filling her mates in on the rest of my tragic story, I’m sure they’re finding it most amusing” he tutted, downing his drink and ordering another.

“The girl on the end is quite cute” Howard mused.

“No, no way! I’m not talking to any of them or helping you in anyway”

“Come on don’t be so fucking miserable. What’s the worst that can happen?”

“Think of the worst thing and then double that at least, after Monday that saying doesn’t exist in my vocabulary anymore”

“I can’t believe you’re still grumpy about that” Howard placed his drink down on the bar and started to walk over to the girls table.

“Ladies” he grinned as he stood in front of them.

“Look I had a nice chat with your friend over there the other day and I take it your skills aren’t much better than his, so we’re not interested” Cassie said before turning back to Alison and carrying on her conversation.

“It’s a good job I wasn’t talking to you then wasn’t it? Talk about miserable cow!”

“I beg your pardon?”

Howard turned back to the cute girl at the end of the table and asked her if she’d like to dance.

“Me? Erm yeah go on then!” She grinned back at the girls as he took her hand and led her to the floor.

“So, your friend is she always so snappy?”

“She’s a bit of a tough nut to crack but once you do she’s lovely”

“So you’d be good at matters concerning nuts then?” he smirked.

“I might be”

“I’m Howard by the way, but I’m guessing you knew that?”

“I did, the others didn’t. I mean do they live under a rock or something?! Oh and I’m Mel”

“So Cassie had no idea who Jay was, it was just his sparkling personality that put her off?”

Mel giggled and nodded.
“Well that and the fact she found it a bit weird he’d go looking for a perfect stranger”

“Hmmm”

“Howard, don’t! I can tell what you’re thinking and she doesn’t like being set up or told what to do”

“I wasn’t thinking anything!”

“You live up to your reputation then?” she giggled earning her a look of hurt from Howard before he told her he was leaving and she quickly apologised.

A few hours later Mark and Gary had gone home and Howard had barely spoken to me since he had gotten hold of Mel. Finishing my drink I went outside to wait for a cab. When one approached and I stuck my hand out someone else had the idea at the same time and as the cab stopped I looked over at her.

“I hope you don’t think you’re having this cab, I was here first!” she snapped at me.

“Actually I don’t think you were”

“I don’t care what you think; I’m getting in and going home. You can wait for the next one!”

“What direction are you going?”

“You have my name and work place, now you want my address too?”

“Oh forget it, I was going to suggest we could share but I wish I hadn’t bothered now”

She got in the taxi and closed the door leaning over to tell the driver where she wanted to go. She looked out and saw Jason pull up the collar of his coat and shove his hands in his pockets as he waited in the icy night for another cab. Just as the driver was about to pull away she asked him to stop and opened the door.

“I’m going to Notting Hill” she called out to me, seemed I was now worthy enough to be spoken to.

“Good for you!”

“If you’re near then you can get in” she offered, against her better judgement.

“Are you sure? I don’t want you to think I’m stalking you, trying to find out where you live so that I can come and follow you and rummage in your rubbish!!”

“Look I’m sorry for being so snappy, are you getting in or not? I don’t really care if I’m being honest”

I stepped inside the cab and told the driver my address, turning to Cassie and offering a smile which she didn’t seem to be interested in. The journey was spent in silence and we pulled up outside my place first. I gave the cab driver some money telling him that should cover the whole fare only to be reprimanded by Cassie.

“I can pay my own way thank you. Give him half what you just did, I’ll pay the rest!”

“Are you always so bloody pig headed?”

“I don’t need anyone paying my way ok? I may work in a book shop; it doesn’t mean I’m on the poverty line!”

“I didn’t assume that it did, God you’ve got some issues. I’m glad I didn’t get the chance to ask you out!” I slammed the door of the cab shut and went inside, getting a glass of water and going straight to bed. As I lay there in the darkness all I could think about was Cassie, the way she smiled; the way her eyebrow raised when she was mad; the way her hair fell round her face when she’d removed it from the clip that had been holding it in place. Shaking his head he pulled the covers up over him trying not to think about her anymore.

Over the next two weeks I had sent flowers, a box of heart shaped cupcakes and a “dating for dummies” book to her at her work. The heads of the flowers had been cut off and shoved through my letter box, the cupcakes had been sliced up and the box left on my doorstep and the book had been returned with a note saying I might want to read it before finding my next victim. At first I had wondered how she knew where I lived before realising I had gotten out the taxi first after the club and she must have remembered. I was almost ready to give up but then thought I’d have one last try. All those things had been fine but I should be pursuing her in person, showing her she was worth the effort. The following day after work I walked to the book shop and walked over to the till point, flashing my best grin and looking straight at the woman behind the counter. It didn’t take long for her to agree to what I was asking; as it turned out she was the manager and had heard all about my attempts to talk to Cassie and had also seen all the gifts I’d sent. Clearly she felt pity for me, but I’d take the pity if it meant another shot at getting Cassie. She stepped aside and let me behind the counter showing me how to work the tannoy system. I picked it up and started talking:

“This is a staff announcement...”

Cassie had been on the 2nd floor in the travel section when she heard an unfamiliar voice over the tannoy.

“This is a message for Cassie; I know you’re here somewhere so please listen to what I have to say. I’ve tried every way that I know how to get to you but they were all wrong, I should have come to you in person in the first place”

She almost dropped the pile of books she was holding as she stood there listening to what was going on, her friend Lisa looked over at her and grinned.

“I think we got off on the wrong foot Cassie, from that first moment I saw you I can’t stop thinking about you. All I’m asking is for a chance to get to know you and see what happens. I’m on the ground floor at the main desk, please come and talk to me”

“Go on Cas, what you waiting for?” Lisa asked and pushed her towards the stairs.

She took them two at a time and my face split into a grin as I saw her approach.

“Who do you think you are? I don’t know what’s wrong with you but seriously, enough! I have to work here and you think you can just come in and...”

She was stopped when I stepped forward and kissed her, holding her face in my hands and not letting go, taking the kiss deeper as I noticed she wasn’t protesting. Her hands slipped round my neck and she pulled me in closer. As we parted there was a round of applause from the few customers and staff who were watching the scene unfold.

“See, that’s all I wanted. Was for you to come and show me how YOU felt, not by sending me crap that only shows you’ve got some money”

“So if I had done this the first time I saw you, you’d have given me a chance?” I asked almost in disbelief.

“Oh no, the first time I’d have told you to get lost, however if you’d come back instead of sending those flowers...”

I stood there not knowing what to say and decided rather than spoil the moment I’d kiss her again. Holding her tight I bent her backwards over my knee and leaned down to kiss her as rounds of applause rang in our ears once again.
